Harvesting fields, gathering firewood, nursing the newest baby and hauling laundry to the creek is the rural Guatemalan version of a workout. It is an honor to engage with these women in securing their housing. Our part feels like a small thing in light of the big issues they face.
The tough thing about the freedom and wealth that we, American Diplomats, possess is that we have the power to do a little good or tremendous bad. If we are not mindful of how we share our experience with others, then we will struggle to promote compassion effectively in the world. Our volunteer project is overseen by the National Forestry Agency, which is part of the Chilean Ministry of the Environment. Their responsibilities include the protection and control of Easter Island's natural resources through a variety of programs. The most important are forest fire prevention and control, erosion control, natural resource monitoring, the conservation of native flora and environmental education - among others. Recently, the project is setting up a climate protection program to prepare the local population for the consequences of climate change.

This is a unique location to get involved in climate and environmental protection while learning about the local culture and the mystic history that surrounds this island. In this wonderful project you work very close with the local as the farm operates as a community center where especially women and children can learn and persoanlly grow. In addition to the sustainable production of fruit and vegetables and the care of the animals, the ecological Farm serves as a community center.

After 10 years and close to 300 students and over 50 homes, the trips get better and better each year. Not only are we making a difference for the people of Guatemala, but the trips have greatly impacted the students, many of which have returned with their families to build again”. On a Saturday afternoon in February, Israel Vaíl, a forty-eight-year-old father of two, was cleaning up a construction site in his yard, on the outskirts of a town called Cajolá.

Likewise, schools and community centers have been built in the past. Three days a week, Vaíl and his son speak by phone to talk about the project. Vaíl sends him photos and status reports on Facebook, and his son makes requests for modifications.

Be careful not to over-water your basil; it tends to be picky of it’s water needs. While you can get away with automatic watering for a lot of food plants, basil is going to want individual attention. It’s pretty amazing how much work you’ve gotten done for such little cost.

The town was similar to Antigua with its cobblestone streets and lime plastered buildings, but you could tell the difference immediately. Our participants gain freedom, dignity and security, allowing them to live to their full potential.
“Here, it’s not always what the designer wants but what the builder is capable of doing,” Vaíl said. “The problem here is that most of the builders have left. He insisted on having a bathroom in the master bedroom, and Vaíl coördinated with a team of five builders to make it happen.
Well, it is better than liveable, thanks to BF’s relentless efforts to always fix stuff, move furniture around and try to optimize things. As long as the roof stopped leaking and the house was reasonably clean, that was enough for me. We put such effort into fitting the first plastic protection on top of the thatched roof for example, that I didn’t feel like upgrading to the transparent roof in months. Now that it is all fixed, I am happy the house looks much better, but really, I don’t feel like doing much on it until the other room is finished. So BF is working for two, with the handyman and I am focusing on developing the 90 acre piece of land that came with the house.

The poor turkey is not tied by the beach so that he doesn’t bother the hens, maybe in a few days he can be free again. What feels like we are spending a lot is we are constantly making checks to people, for material, wages, and paying things little by little. We sold the plastic roof cover that cost us $160 for $110 after one month of use to a neighbor with a leaking roof. No profit here but at least we got some money back to spend on the new transparent roof. Most of it was to register a limited company of which we each hold 50% of the shares. This is the eighth part about the conversion of the land I bought in Guatemala and my new life here, you can read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 and Part 7 if you missed them.

All the kids loved it and every time someone played a card, they would scream BS with enthusiasm. Eventually, they would have all the cards in their hand, but they didn’t care. They had huge grins on their little faces as if they were trying to show me how many teeth they had. I don’t know who came up with the idea, but somehow we decided to play BS, the card game. (I don’t know if you are familiar with the game, but basically, you play cards face down, and if people think you are lying then they say BS.
Houses to Homes House Building in Guatemala
Thank you Mr CBB, happy new year to you as well. The city is about 20 miles away and we have a very thirsty car that uses about $20 of gas so we go at most once a week. The nearby village has basic shops with eggs, beans, flour… and the drinking water gets delivered to our door.
